About Us

The Association of Otolaryngologists in Training (AOT) is an organisation that represents all Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery trainees throughout the UK and throughout their training careers. We are independent and are run by trainees, for trainees.

All ENT trainees in the UK are automatically eligible to be members and there is no fee to be a member of the AOT. As well as a large cohort of registrars, we also encourage core trainees, foundation year doctors, and more recently, medical students interested in ENT to get involved.

The AOT was formed many years ago by a group of senior registrars in ENT. As a collection of individuals we have grown quickly in number in recent years partly due to workforce changes and partly to changes in the structure of training.

More about AOT

The AOT puts forward the views of its membership through representation on the councils and committees of ENT-UK, Specialist Advisory Committee in Otolaryngology, Education and Training Committee, the Intercollegiate Exam Board, the Royal Society of Medicine sections, the Association of Surgeons in Training, and many other groups. In these times of uncertainty regarding the direction of training and changing goalposts it is more important than ever for all trainees to have their voice heard and our representation on these committees relies on your feedback and input.

We also meet once a year to discuss current issues in ENT and we welcome all ENT trainees of whatever grade to attend the annual AOT conference. It is a great opportunity to learn more about the key issues affecting training, meet your fellow trainees and future consultant colleagues, and often to give feedback directly to those consultants making decisions that impact us day to day.

If you do have questions about your training, firstly choose the most appropriate person for the job. Look for the AOT Officers or contact your Regional Representatives as some problems may well have been discussed before. If you have information on training opportunities that you would like to share feel free to post on the Forum.

We are happy to advertise free courses / materials to our membership at no cost; any materials that incur cost however will incur an advertising fee. Please contact aotent@gmail.com for more information.

If you would like to become involved then we welcome you to the AOT conference. You could offer to represent the AOT either regionally or on one of the committees / councils. Alternatively just contribute to the forum, discussion group and occasional survey.

Our History

In 1988 the Leeds Senior Registrars, John Pickles (Luton) Mark Terry (Farnborough) and Malcolm Clayton (S Wales) decided to invite all the ENT SRs to a meeting. It was an outstanding success academically and socially. In those days there were fewer than 80 SRs and many of us knew each other from the registrar circuit.

As a result of that event, I volunteered to hold the 2nd event in Nottingham in April 1989. As the single SR in my department I was a little optimistic! In the event a good time was indeed had by all and I introduced the name AoT and became the first President. Since then with the introduction of the SpR grade, the Association has expanded and remains healthy. I am proud to be an Honorary member.
